The Summer School in Leadership and Governance for Sustainable Tourism is an annual and European leading event that brings together key representatives of the tourism sector: donors, policy makers, industry representatives, project management practitioners, academics and entrepreneurs. The event was created by FEST (Foundation for European Sustainable Tourism) to promote PM4SD™ as the methodology to apply in tourism projects and to discuss the professionalization of project management in sustainable tourism. This makes the Summer School the perfect place to share practices on how to plan and manage tourism funding with sustainability, and also to improve project management and effectiveness in the tourism sector. Each year, the Summer School takes place in a different European country. Any organisation that shows interest in hosting this event can do so by applying through the call for host organisations.
The first edition was held in Naples, Italy, gathering 150 professionals from all over Europe. Key speakers included representatives from international organisations such as the European Commission, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism, the European Investment Bank, Leeds Metropolitan University, Europarc, among others. As a result, the Naples Declaration was established with the goal to call all stakeholders involved in the design, commissioning, delivery and receivership of sustainable tourism to tourism related projects to deliver and demonstrate impactful benefits for sustainable development.
