EARTH conference on European Realities of Responsible Tourism

On December 2nd 2013 the conference  European Realities of Responsible Tourism took place in Brussels, gathering 25 speakers for sessions on responsible tourism, fair trade in tourism and accessible tourism best practices.

Relevant and important contributions came from European  associations, cooperatives,  responsible tourism operators who apply the principles of innovation, dynamism, diversity, responsibility and collaboration in promoting the principles of responsible tourism and acknowledging the role and interest of local communities, as well as promoting solidarity and the fight against poverty through tourism.

Jlag presented the PM4SD methodology in project management for Sustainable Development during the conference. The methodology, based on PRINCE2, aims at creating, designing, implementing and monitoring successful and efficient sustainable tourism projects.

As closing, a memorandum of understanding was presented by reaffirming the key framework set up by the European Commission related to Sustainable Tourism, the European Charter for Sustainable and Responsible Tourism and the launch of the European Tourism indicators systems. Earth put the accent on the fundamental concepts of communication seen as a tool to access the tourism offer, the active and participatory involvement of local communities in the democratic decision-making process and the role of local youth and female entrepreneurship in the launch of receptive small businesses and services dedicated to tourism.
